about

Back in the early days of the internet, James Mahoney and I were swapping lines of haiku via email (see Jim's affliction on this album and co-writing credits on past records). I saved these lines in a file because I felt that the lines, though unpolished, could become a song one day.

The lyrics to this lay unfinished for several years but I finally completed them for this record. In the words of Guy Clark about his friend Townes, It's "full of angst and hillbilly haiku".

lyrics

Hill Country Rambling
Copyright 2003
James Mahoney and Robert Nathan

Well James said:

Get well, I too want
Steak, whiskey and hot cow flesh
Spring has sprung
My heart is a mess

To which I replied:

Well will get, I want too
Steak whiskey and hot Haiku
Spring has sprung
The turn is to you

And so the story goes:

Well she was from Austin
Been a coed there for a year
She was long and blond
And I was full of fear

I found myself fond
Imagination blurred in suds
Floating in beer
Habaneros in my blood

Hill Country Ramblin’
Ain't exactly what I planned
Six strings a jamblin
I’ll be a lonely man
As long as I’m in this Texas country band

She called my name “Dammit”
I answered as always “Yes mam”
Tis best to belong to the land
Ain’t life grand

West Texas hills
Waterfalls and spills
While boiling blood bonds
Flesh and earth responds

Chorus

My heart got busted
It lay rusted on the floor
With my insides all crusted
I’ll head for the door

The only thing left
That I understand
Is my dusty old guitar
And my Texas country Band

Chorus

Altro

Lord take me back
To the time of Jack Kerouac
Those were my Andy Hardy Days
Now I’m a travelin’ troubadour
Just knockin’ on the devil’s door
As I ramble with my Texas country band

As I ramble with my Texas country
